Holy Manoly a multi-lane highway |
Anchorage from Earthquake Park |
Aaargh EARTHQUAKE!!!!! |

Ellen and Dwight D Eisenhower |
We left Palmer and headed to Anchorage a 40 mile drive. The surprising thing was about 25 miles outside Anchorage the roads began to look like the USA. For the first time in Alaska we saw multi-lane highways. I know that doesnt sound interesting but we have not been on a multilane highway in 4 weeks since we left I-15 in Montana.
Anchorage is a city of 300,000 people. We stopped at the RV repair place where we hope Monday to have our water leak corrected. It really isn't that bad but we are afraid it may warp or destroy some inside floors. We then attempted to find a RV campground. The 2 we looked at in Anchorage looked like a parking lot with very old broken down RV's and people. We then drove a bit outside the city and found one that was not too bad. Unfortunately Ellen got into an argument with the owner about the shitty location he gave us, came back slammed the car door and said "I'm gonna park where I f....n want" I of course knowing that mood said "Of course dear".
We then went downtown and got our bikes and biked around "Earthquake Park" For those non-historical readers on Good Friday 1964 Anchorage had a 9.0 earthquake downtown which destroyed the city. The park is their way of commemorating that day. About a quarter mile of land fell into the sea, cars people and houses. In what seems to be an asking for trouble decision they have built many middle-class houses on what is now the shore area in the last 50 years.
After biking through the parks and neighborhoods about 10 miles (OK maybe 2) we then went downtown to 4th Ave which is their main drag. We found the Anchorage Natives Saturday fair and walked and we ate American style poffertjes(funnel cakes). We then went to the Eisenhower 49th state commemoration statue. We met 2 interesting Anchoragites---she was a dental assistant and he had his private pilots license so I didnt have too much to talk about. Tomorrow is going to be a rest day as we are staying in Anchorage until at least Monday
Thats all folks!
