Yes folks you betcha', that Wasilla Alaska the home of the 2008 Republical vice presidential candidate. We left Talkeetna heading towards Anchorage. We stopped at the Talkeetna lodge where they have this 50 foot fireplace overlooking Mt McKinley. Unfortunately due to cloud cover we could not see it. (Mt McKinley, not the fireplace) Then we were on the road again about 60 miles to the city of Wasilla. Of course I being the curious type set out on a quest to find the home of Sarah and Todd. With a little help from the internet we found it only to be greeted by a sign that said very firmly "PRIVATE,KEEP OUT". Knowing Sarah's ability with a shotgun, I decided to heed that advice and turn around. Even if Sarah was at the Paul Revere rewritting of history convention, Todd could probably beat the crap out of me.(See photo of their warm welcome to this conservative republican.)
We then went to the Ididerod museum in Wasilla where I found not only a fascinating story of why they have the ididerod (Commemorating the delivery of anti-diptheria medication to native americans in Nome in 1917 by way of 600 miles of dog-sledding. NOW WHO REALLY KNEW THAT???) but also the story of Dr McKinley the first flying dentist of Alaska!!! (Now don't you think I found that interesting.) Thats the beauty of travel---you never know what you will find.
Just when you think the day could not have any more surprises we moved on to Palmer, a cute town that really had a downtown and a carnival. BTW Wasilla is not a very interesting town-it's spread out without a center. So we picked up cheese, chocolate and salsa from local vendors and had a fairly interesting dinner of local delicacies.
Thats all folks
